Motorcycle brake check: signs your brakes need attention
Brakes wear slowly, so problems are easy to miss. Learn the warning signs, a quick home check, and habits that make your brakes last.

Your brakes are the most important safety part on your motorcycle. They also wear out slowly, so most riders get used to weaker stopping without noticing. With the rains easing in Ilocos Norte and roads getting hot and dusty again, now is a good time to give your brakes a proper look.
Why brakes wear faster than you think
Every stop turns a little of your brake pads into dust. Months of wet roads add mud and grit, which grind the pads and discs even faster. Then the heat and dust of the dry months bake that dirt onto the brake parts. Daily stop-and-go riding in town, steep roads and riding with a backride or heavy cargo all add to the wear.
This is true for every type of bike. A Click or Mio with a rear drum brake, an NMAX or PCX with front discs, or a big bike like an MT-09 or KTM all need their brakes checked regularly.
Signs your brakes need attention
- A squeal or grinding sound when you brake
- The lever or pedal feels soft, spongy or goes further than before
- You need to squeeze harder to stop the same way
- The bike pulls or shakes when braking
- A pulsing feel in the lever, which can mean a warped disc
- Brake fluid that looks dark instead of clear or light yellow
- Deep grooves or a shiny, glazed surface on the disc
If you notice any of these, do not wait. Brakes rarely fix themselves, and worn pads can damage the disc, which costs more to replace.
A quick check you can do at home
- Look at the pads through the caliper. If there is only about 2 mm of pad material left, they are due for replacement.
- Check the brake fluid window on the reservoir. The level should be between the marks and the fluid should look clean.
- Squeeze the front lever and press the rear brake while the bike is parked. Both should feel firm, not soft.
- Push the bike forward a few metres. The wheels should roll freely without rubbing or dragging.
- For drum brakes, see how far the lever travels before the brake bites. Too much travel means it needs adjusting or new shoes.
Riding habits that make brakes last
Look far ahead and slow down early instead of braking hard at the last second. Use both brakes together, not just the rear. On long downhill roads, ease off the throttle and brake in short steps so the brakes do not overheat. After riding through floods or mud, test your brakes gently at low speed before you need them.
