Rain changes everything about riding. Grip drops, stopping distances grow and other road users see you less. A few checks before the wet months make a real difference to your safety.

Tires: tread and pressure

Tread grooves push water away from the contact patch. Worn, flat or cracked tires lose grip quickly on wet roads. Check the tread depth and look for cracks on the sidewall, and set the pressure to the figures in your manual. Replace tires that are close to the wear indicators before the rains, not after a slide.

Brakes

Brakes that feel fine when dry can feel weak in the rain. Check pad thickness, brake fluid and that the levers feel firm. Squealing or a spongy lever means it is time for a brake check.

Lights and horn

Make sure the headlight, tail light, brake light and signals all work. Visibility matters more in rain and at dusk. Cleanly installed fog lights or MDLs help you see and be seen.

Chain care

Rain washes lube off the chain and brings in grit. Clean and lube the chain more often in the wet season to prevent rust and wear.

Electrical connections

Water finds its way into weak connectors and bad wiring. Starting problems or flickering lights after rain are worth checking early.

Ride for the conditions

Slow down, leave more space, brake gently and early, and avoid painted lines and metal covers, which get very slippery when wet.
