A second-hand motorcycle can be great value, but it can also come with problems the seller does not mention. An inspection before you buy helps you avoid a costly mistake and gives you a fair basis for the price.

Start with the papers

Check that the registration papers match the bike. The engine and chassis numbers should match the documents, and the seller should be the registered owner or able to show proof of the right to sell.

Look closely at the bike

• Engine: listen for knocking or rattles on a cold start, and look for oil leaks or smoke from the exhaust.
• Frame: bends, cracks, fresh welds or mismatched paint can point to a past accident.
• Suspension: oily fork tubes or shocks that bounce too much are signs of leaking seals.
• Brakes and tires: check pad wear, lever feel, tread depth and cracks.
• Electricals: test every light, the horn, the signals and the starter.
• Chain and sprockets or CVT: hooked sprocket teeth or a noisy CVT mean parts are due.

Take it for a test ride

If the seller agrees, ride it. It should start easily, idle smoothly, shift or pull cleanly and track straight when braking.
