Choosing the Right Engine Oil for Your Motorcycle

Viscosity, JASO ratings and synthetic versus mineral: a plain guide to picking oil that protects your engine.

Engine oil does more than lubricate. It cools, cleans and protects the engine, and on most underbones and manual bikes it also lubricates the clutch. Using the wrong oil can mean clutch slip, more wear and a shorter engine life.

Follow the viscosity in your manual

The numbers on the bottle, like 10W-40, describe how the oil flows when cold and when hot. Your owner’s manual lists the grade your engine was designed for. Stick to it unless a technician recommends otherwise for your riding conditions.

Check the JASO rating

Motorcycles have different needs from cars. Look for a JASO rating on the label:

  • JASO MA or MA2 is made for bikes with a wet clutch, such as most underbones and manual motorcycles.
  • JASO MB is made for automatic scooters, where the clutch is dry and separate from the engine oil.

Car oil with friction modifiers can make a wet clutch slip, so do not use it on a manual bike.

Fully synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral?

Fully synthetic oil holds up better under heat and stays stable for longer, which suits hot weather and stop-and-go traffic. It costs more per bottle, but it offers the most protection. That is why every MotoNorte PMS package uses fully synthetic oil.

Do not forget the filter and gear oil

Bikes with an oil filter need it replaced on schedule, or new oil is quickly contaminated. Scooters also need their final drive gear oil changed from time to time.
